India equals Afghanistan’s world record in T20Is

NEW DEHLI: India has equaled Afghanistan’s elite record in international cricket. Indian team has won 12 consecutive T20I games in international cricket India by defeating Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I by 6 wickets to bag a 3-0 whitewash in the series.

Afghanistan held the record for the maximum number of consecutive T20I wins in international cricket by a Test-playing nation with 12 victories. Now, India also accounts for 12 consecutive wins and joins Afghanistan in the record. If India wins their next T20I encounter, they will surpass Afghanistan in the record.

India has been undefeated in the shortest format since their previous loss to New Zealand in ICC T20 World Cup 2021 last year. After facing a loss to New Zealand, India won three back-to-back matches by defeating Afghanistan, Namibia, and Scotland respectively.

Earlier, India defeated New Zealand 3-0 in three T20I games at home in November last year. Post victory over New Zealand, India defeated West Indies in three T20I games at home. India defeated West Indies by 6 wickets in the 1st T20I, 8 runs in the 2nd T20I, and 17 runs in the 3rd T20I.

Later, the Rohit Sharma-led side also crushed Sri Lanka in three T20I games. India defeated Sri Lanka in the 1st T20I by 62 runs, 2nd T20I by 7 wickets, and 3rd T20I by 6 wickets. Shreyas Iyer was awarded the player of the series award in the T20I series against Sri Lanka for smacking an unbeaten half-century in each game.

India’s next T20I encounter will be against South Africa in June when they face the team at home in 5 T20I games at home. India will now face Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series, starting March 4.

Rohit Sharma will lead the team for the first time in Tests, as he has been appointed as the new Test skipper of India. Post India vs Sri Lanka Test series, IPL 2022 is scheduled to take place from March to May.
