KARACHI: Strong gusty winds have blanketed Karachi under the influence of a westerly weather system, the meteorological department said on Thursday.
The winds are blowing in the city from the west at 25knots (44km) to 30knots (56km) as a result of a ‘steep pressure gradient’, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
The maximum winds were reported at Faisal Base 25kt, Masroor 22kt & Karachi airport 16kt.
The Met Office has issued an alert that the winds can damage vulnerable and loose structures. People take precautions and avoid going outside.
District Municipal Corporation (East) directed authorities to remove advertising panels and screens on a priority basis to avoid any loss to life and property.
During this period the sea would be rough. The Met department has advised fishermen to avoid going into the deep sea.
Cold westerly winds could cause the temperatures in Sindh and Baluchistan to drop to as low as 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Karachi will likely drop to 12 degrees Celsius.
