Akbar Ahmed

Former diplomat, author, playwright, poet, and filmmaker

Prof. Dr. Akbar Ahmed is the former Pakistani High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland and holds the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington, DC. He was awarded the 2017 Sir Syed Day Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Poetry, Literature, Arts, and the Sciences.

Ahmed has produced numerous noteworthy films and penned more than a dozen award-winning books in addition to his academic and public-sector positions.

Jinnah Quartet and Jinnah, a feature picture, were both produced by him (1998). He was named the American University School of International Service’s 2017 Scholar/Teacher of the Year.

Ahmed’s abilities have been lauded all around the world. “The world’s foremost expert on modern Islam,” declared by BBC, and ” Perhaps the most prominent living authority on current Muslim society,” praised by Saudi Gazette.

PakPac USA presented Ahmed with the Diplomatic Leadership Award in 2019 for his remarkable academic achievements. He’s made two documentaries, ‘Journey into America’ and ‘Journey into Europe,’ both of which are followed by books of the same titles.

The book has been featured in multiple summer reading lists and received positive reviews in popular publications, including, The New York Times and the San Francisco Review of Books.

Journey into Islam: The Crisis of Globalization (2007), Journey into America: The Challenge of Islam (2010), and The Thistle and the Drone: How America’s War on Terror Became a Global War on Tribal Islam (2013), were the first three volumes in the quartet to attract significant media attention.

Ahmed’s distinguished career has earned him numerous honors, including the Government of Pakistan’s Star of Excellence (Sitara-i-Imtiaz) for academic distinction and Medal of Excellence (Tamgha-i-Imtiaz); the first-ever Purpose Prize, which he shared with Judea Pearl; the inaugural Gandhi Memorial Center Peace Award; the inaugural Award of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington; and the Carnegie Foundation’s Professor of the Year Award for Washington, D.C IN 2004.

Ahmed consistently featured in the list of the World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims. Also, being named a 2015 Global Thought Leader by the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute and The Huffington Post’s World Post.­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­

He has been acknowledged as a “Notable Alumnus” of the school of orientation and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and Birmingham University, UK.
