DHAKA: Small red bricks, simple architecture, zigzagging canal for inpatient and out patients and waterlogging landscape of Friendship hospital in southern Bangladesh won the best building of the world.
‘Friendship hospital’ designed by Kashef Chowdhury the winner of the RIBA international prize 2021. This hospital is commissioned by NGO friendship, the hospital provides a vital medical facility to rural communities of Satkhira, Bangladesh, a coastal area that has been directly impacted by rising sea levels and consider a cyclone prone district of the country.
Kashef Chowdhury said in a press statement that this may inspire more of us to commit, not in spite of, but because of limitations of resources and means, to an architecture of care both for humanity and for nature, he said in a press statement.
The Royal Institute of British Architects RIBA International Prize was established in 2016 to highlight the best architecture from around the world. This awards held after two years, this year 16 finalists were selected in 11 countries, Friendship hospital was one of three projects shortlisted for the award. The shortlist included two European projects: James-Simon-Galerie, an art gallery on Berlin’s Museum Island, and Lille Langebro, a 525-foot-long vehicle-free bridge in the Danish capital, Copenhagen.
