Khabib Nurmagomedov (mixed martial artist, Russian sportsman)

Khabib Abdulmanapovich Nurmagomedov is a Dagestan-born mixed martial artist who has earned the moniker “Eagle” among athletes. In the UFC, he participates in the lightweight class. Following his fight with Al Iaquinta in April 2018, the sportsman became the first Russian to win a UFC championship. He is the first Russian and Muslim to win a UFC title. He is also the youngest Russian wrestler in history to fight in the UFC.

Khabib was born in the village of Kirovaul in the Kizilyurtovsky District on September 20, 1988. (present-day Russia). Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, a combat veteran and distinguished athlete, is the second of his three children. Muhammad Nurmagomedov is his older brother, while Amina is his younger sister.

Khabib has been in fight training since he was a child. The family relocated to Makhachkala in 2001. He began wrestling training here, and when he was 15, he took judo instruction as well. Though he found the transition from wrestling to judo difficult at first, his father insisted that he learn to compete in an outfit. His father began teaching him in combat sambo when he was 17 years old. His family afterward relocated to Kiev in Ukraine where he continued his training.

He defeated the interim title when he returned to the ring in September 2019. He is ethnically from Dagestan, a Russian republic, and has adopted the moniker ‘the eagle’ to honor his homeland. This has garnered widespread popularity among Muslim youngsters in Dagestan, Chechnya, and other ex-Soviet Muslim majority nations. His appeal isn’t restricted to them since he’s been able to transcend racial divides.

Nurmagomedov is the world’s second-most popular Muslim athlete, behind Egyptian player Mohamed Salah.

Following his victory over McGregor at UFC 229, Nurmagomedov was named an “Honorary Citizen of Grozny” by Grozny Mayor Ibrahim Zakriev in 2018. Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya’s president, also gave him a Mercedes automobile, which was supported by the Akhmad Kadyrov Foundation, and his father Abdulmanap was given the title of “Honored Worker of Physical Culture of the Chechen Republic” by Kadyrov.

Nurmagomedov and his father, Abdulmanap, were given the “Order for Services” to the Republic of Dagestan by President Vladimir Vasilyev in 2019 for their “great contributions to sports in Dagestan.”

He was a two-time world champion in combat sambo, as well as an International Master of Sports in Army Hand-to-Hand Combat and Pankration.

Khabib Nurmagomedov has won titles in mixed martial arts, sambo, grappling, and pankration, among other sports. He is the most followed Russian on Instagram, with millions of followers.
