ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan has taken back the June 19, 2018 notification regarding cancellation of Senate membership of ex-finance minister, Ishaq Dar, who is in London for medical treatment, and issued the notification of membership’s restoration.
In December 2021, the Supreme Court had ended the stay for issuing the notification of Muslim League Nawaz senator, Ishaq Dar’s victory after rejecting the plea of Nawaz Pirzada of Pakistan People’s Party for disqualification on the bases of non-prosecution.
In the plea, Nawaz Pirzada had said Dar was an absconder and thus did not qualify to participate in senate elections.
In a statement ECP said the senate membership of Ishaq Dar stood restored from March 9, 2018 as he was succeeded in March 3, 2018 senate polls as an independent candidate. PML N had supported him, but he could not take oath.
According to the new election laws, Ishaq Dar will have to take oath as senator within 60 days otherwise the seat will be declared vacant.
Ishaq Dar is on London since October 2017 and an accountability court had declared him absconder in a corruption reference.
